I first met Jemima (Jimmy) outside of a hotel in Mombasa, Kenya, at her stand where she was selling jewelry. This was more than 16 years ago and I have grown to admire her strength and courage that she displays daily in spite of the serious difficulties and discrimination suffered in a society that often feel that the handicapped have been cursed and can transmit their disabilities to others. She is a tireless fighter on a mission to improve the lives of the handicapped at the local level but also to enact laws at the national level that will offer many of the things that we take for granted here in the US; such as building ramps and toilet stalls that will accommodate wheelchairs. She and the group of women that she works with produce fabulous jewelry of all types but especially the Masai necklaces worn by tribal women.
